OUR STORY

PROTEO was founded in Rome in March 1996, but had already been active since 1993 thanks to its founding members. Over two decades it produced and promoted theatre, dance, music and visual arts, with a strong focus on experimentation and on the professional growth of young artists.

Among its projects: the soundtrack for Brecht's Judith von Shimoda for the Berliner Ensemble (1998), Jean Cocteau's La voce umana at the first Notte Bianca in Rome (2003), music for Sabina Guzzanti's stage shows and films (2004–2009), and dance projects for young people in Rome's neighbourhoods (2010–2014).

In 2014 the association paused its activities, as many of its members had moved abroad. In 2024 founding member Raffaella Appià relaunched it with Patrizio Bucci and Tommaso Petrolo. In 2025 it became a third-sector organisation, PROTEO ETS, and created the first edition of COORDINATE Festival in Calcata.
